Gruigi time?
The box office for The Super Mario Bros. Movie is huge. Like, record-breaking huge. It feels like yesterday that cries of "the video game movie curse" filled the air whenever a new take on a game hit cinemas, but now we know that these adaptations can be both good and big. Really big.
The Mario Movie's success at the box office will undoubtedly spawn at least one sequel and we'd be surprised if the spin-offs end there (might we be looking at the start of the NCU?). In the past, we thought about the potential for other animation studios to take the reins on some of Nintendo's much-loved franchises — we still stay awake at night thinking of a Metroid film in the style of Into the Spiderverse — but it looks like, for the time being at least, future Nintendo movies will be firmly in the hands of Illumination.
